BLOG POST 14: The SCHIZOPHRENIA (Part 02)

Previous blog was an attempt to provide information about  SIMPLE | HEBEPHRANIC OR DISORGANIZED | CATATONIC | PARANOID types of SCHIZOPHRENIC diseases. This blog will be an attempt to give information and create awareness about SPLIT PERSONALITY or MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER categorized under HEBEPHRANIC or DISORGANIZED SCHIZOPHRENIA. Patients suffering from this mental illness tend to lose mental connection with themselves as well as with others. The symptoms seem to be similar to HYSTERICAL DISASSOCIATION. The only difference is that HYSTERICAL DISASSOCIATION does not have a deep impact on the patient’s personality. It is observed that the important components of the patient's personality get separated from the core personality for a short time but they return back soon. But in SCHIZOPHRENIA especially in the case of SPLIT or MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER, it becomes very tough.

The different personalities in the same person are an outcome of an unpleasant event that must have been occurred in childhood, rejections or disrespectful behaviour faced on different grounds from the outside world, friends, family etc by the original personality. When the person's original personality gets suppressed due to these various factors, the scars remain deeply rooted in the subconscious mind affecting the person's feelings.

If the suppression exceeds beyond limit or crosses the tolerance level, an alternate personality may emerge in the form of an imaginary person in the mind of the same person. This newly born personality helps the original personality to revolt and fight against all the suppressions faced by the original personality. The main personality may or may not be aware about this new born personality. The original personality may or may not even have a connection with another personality. But If he/she is aware of the other personality residing in the same body and mind, then they hallucinate the other personality as a different person and start communicating with it. They also consider the other personality as their sympathizer or friend.

The things which the person is not able to do through his original personality, he starts doing or achieving it all with the help of the other personality maybe knowingly or unknowingly. But this is a type of HALLUCINATION. The outside world sees the second personality as altogether a different. If the patient is unaware of the other personality residing inside his body and mind then he is altogether unaware of all the activities which the same person does as a different personality.

It is always believed that human brain carries two minds, Conscious mind and Subconscious mind. It is also believed the the minds think in two different manners, one is the positive manner and other the negative manner. Somewhere this can be the base of MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER. Human beings always accept any event or situation in a positive and negative way. So if one personality focuses on positive aspects then the other personality focuses on negative aspects. At some point, if the thinking of any one of the two personalities becomes dominant, chances of developing dual personality emerge. When a person feels that his main personality is not capable of facing the outer world’s expectation, the competition, his belief in the outside then mentally, a strange dilemma starts in his/her mind. As a result most of the times, the person’s main personality shies away from fulfilling the expectation of the outside world, but the other personality takes the charge of the mind to fulfil the needs and fight back. The same person comes out in front of the world but as altogether a different personality. The world does not find that person outwardly different, but his/her behaviour, mannerisms etc seem completely opposite.

It sounds surprising but it is a proven fact that min two and maximum countless personalities can emerge in one human mind. Every personality in the same human mind lives with a different name, identity, history and characteristics. SPLIT PERSONALITY and ALTER EGO are often misunderstood as the same. ALTER EGO is a part of person’s normal development since childhood. Personality Disorder develops in a human being due to time, situation, events. ALTER EGO is something wherein the person changes his personality and behaviour by his choice but in SPLIT PERSONALITY the person is unaware of these changes. The main personality does not remember anything about the other personality’s behaviour. The another personality is like an unknown person to the main personality.

SPLIT PERSONALITY has always been a favourite subject for film writers.

In his 2016 film SPLIT, Hollywood director Manoj Night Shyamalan described his main character Kevin as a patient suffering from 23 Personality Disorders.

In the American Black comedy titled American Psycho the protagonist is shown a victim of Misunderstood Personality Disorder

Tamil Director Shankar in his film Anniyan (Hindi version: Aparichit) has shown his main character Ramanujan as a patient suffering from 3 Personality Disorders

In the film Kartik Calling Kartik the protagonist is shown as victim of his self imaginary ALTER EGO who comes to his rescue whenever he feels depressed facing his professional and personal issues.

The main personalities of all the lead characters in these films are victims of suppression, humiliation, rejection on social, professional and personal basis giving birth to the other personalities eventually helping them to take revenge or spill out all the frustration within.

The lead character in the film SPLIT is actually based on the 1955-born Billy Mulligan. Billy Mulligan was a patient of 24 personality disorders and was the first assassin in American Legal History to be discharged from his body in a mental asylum.

The fact that 23 personalities reside in one human mind may seem exaggerated, research says there are cases of more than 23 personalities residing in human mind as registered in psychology.

The BAFTA-nominated comedian Kim Nobel has been a victim of 100 personalities residing in her.She is a wellknown personality with the title Kim Nobel: The Woman with 100 is also famous with personalities.

She has penned down her experiences of adopting  and living with all 100 personalities in her book titled: All Of Me.

Although no permanent cure for Split Personality is directed in psychology, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) can definitely control this mental illness. It is important that like any mental ailment, the patient and the people, family and friends around him/her need to accept their mental condition and prepare them for treatment.
