Blog Post 01: The STATE OF MIND

The geographical meaning of the word STATE is the one which is run by officials, as per government regulations, within the purview of Law & Order. But when it gets associated with "THE MIND" it becomes a condition. So if we think about it as a condition i.e. the “STATE”of mind, then it is also necessary to handle and take care of it properly. And if it is not done then "THE STATE" or the condition of the mind can get out of control.

However, there can be many reasons for deteriorating mental state. One should understand that, by paying attention, the working of mind and its condition can be administered properly and if it is not working properly, then one needs to accept the fact.  "Acceptance is the key to cure any kind of ailment."  The change in the mental state or condition can be one of the reason, the person to feel depressed. The biggest problem in relation to mental illness is that, the society, relatives, friends, even parents of the victim consider the person crazy. It is the fear or the shame of the fact, every person carries in his thought process. There is a famous saying in hindi "दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा रोग क्या कहेंगे लोग?"  Due to this thinking of getting validation from people or fear of getting judged, no person suffering from depression dares to come out in the open. The most common thing here is that people suffering from mental illness have to  stay pretending to be okay in front of so called normal people. Mental illness (mostly in middle-class society) is dismissed and considered as an affordable tantrum of rich & wealthy people.

If one is already going through depression and if he has to face such response from the society around him, then he can lose the ability to express his feelings. It is important to understand one thing here that depression is also an ailment just like diabetes and blood pressure. Diabetes and blood pressure are considered as physical disease, and when diagnosed, we immediately start taking medicines and treatments related to it.  But unfortunately this is not the case with mental illness. Diabetes and blood pressure are considered to be hereditary diseases and to some extent it is true. But the increasing mental stress arising due to today's competitive work culture and the struggle to survive with the demanding life style, is also proved to be the main cause of these ailments. Earlier people used to have these ailments in their 60s but now young generation is getting affected by these ailments in merely their 30s. If stress is affecting our health and we are noticing it then we will have to find ways to treat it before it is too late. For this, the easy solution can be to extract some “ME TIME” from the whole day or once in a week. At that time, we can do any work that brings us happiness, which gives mental comfort and peace. This "METIME"helps us meet and communicate with ourselves. At weekends we can spend quality time with our family which can help in establishing communication with other members of the household.

Mental health is just like a vehicle. If we maintain the vehicle properly, with regular servicing, then it works smoothly. But if ignored, it starts showing tantrums and then it is only after going to the service center that we can treat it. In the same way, if mind is not attended regularly there are chances of consulting the doctor for its smooth functioning. Then just as we take the advice of a Physician for any physical ailment or disease, similarly for mental ailment, we can take the advice of any Psychologist or Psychiatrist depending on the intensity. Necessary steps have to be taken by just understanding and adopting this fact. If mental balance or stress is out of our natural handling capacity , then one can suffer from depression without even knowing it.

Psychologists treat patients using talk therapy. They cannot prescribe medicine.

Psychiatrists
treats patients according to the mental and physical symptoms, diagnosis and prescribes the medicine.

Depending on the intensity and mental state of our stress, one can decide whom to consult.

Any person can suffer from depression irrespective of age or gender, even at any stage of life irrespective of one's financial condition, societal status, circumstances or situations. If one does not get timely treatment, then the same depression can increase and affect one’s personality. Due to which a person can become a victim of personality disorders and phobias.

According to the World Health Organization(WHO), one out of every four (4) human in the world is a victim of some mental illness. According to the National Mental Health Survey (2015-17), one in twenty (20) Indians are suffering from depression. Most suicides around the world are caused by depression. According to the description of the World Health Organization (WHO), eight lakh (700,000) people die every year just because of depression. The Indian government is now mandated to introduce stress management and suicide prevention services, skill training and counselling in all educational institutions and workplaces under the National Mental Health Program (NMHP).  .
